El peligro de las generalizaciones - The dangers of generalizations

Últimamente la prensa del medio ambiente y la blogósfera han estado inmersas en debates bastante estériles que, según mi punto de vista podrían ser evitados si acotamos las generalizaciones sobre ¨el calentamiento global¨. Para empezar no se puede hablar de un calentamiento global, ésta es la primera generalización, debido a que las variaciones en las temperaturas mundiales presentan, en su mayoría, un calentamiento en las últimas décadas, sin embargo también existen puntos del planeta donde se han registrado bajas en las temperaturas y se han roto records de temperaturas bajas. Es por eso que me gusta más el término ¨cambios climáticos¨ pues no se ciñen a el calentamiento. Igualmente se ha dicho que las temperaturas no están subiendo, que el clima en su ruta hacia el calentamiento se ha ¨detenido¨ en los últimos años, y para mayor confusión de la sociedad, hay ciencia que sostiene esta afirmación. Sucede que si observamos los registros de temperatura en la escala de décadas es posible hacer esta afirmación, ahora, unas cuantas décadas no significan mucho en las escalas de tiempo planetarias, debiéramos observar tendencias centenarias o milenarias para poder hacer estas afirmaciones, huelga decir que esto no se ha observado. Muchas de éstas afirmaciones parcialmente verdaderas no aportan mucho al entendimiento del fenómeno del cambio climático pero si sirven para confundir, distraer y empujar agendas ¨anti calentamiento global¨ y es por alli donde deberíamos de buscar sus origenes.
Es verdad que muchas personas se toman tan personalmente el ¨calentamiento global¨ que parecen fanáticos de alguna religión y esto también aporta a la confusión al no querer revisar continuamente los supuestos cientificos que se reportan. Esto cobra aún más importancia cuando se estudia un tema con la complejidad del clima global, siendo un sistema de sistemas las variables son tan amplias que hay que irse con cuidado en las aseveraciones.

Personalmente creo que una actitud crítica, ante la ciencia y ante las tendencias es muy sana para poder desarrollar un criterio personal balanceado, ecuánime y justo.

Lately the environmental press and the blogosphere has been immersed on pretty sterile debate that, in my own viewpoint could be avoided if we narrow down the generalizations about ¨global warming¨ To start with we shouldn’t talk about a global warming, this is the first generalization, because the variations on world temperatures present on most of the registries a tendency towards the warm side on the last decades, however there are also lots of points in the planet where colder temperatures had been recorded and even record breaking lows. That is why I like the term ¨climate change¨ because it is not linked to warming. Also it is been said that the temperatures are not getting any warmer and that the climate on its tendency to getting warmer has been stagnated on the last year, and adding to the confusion, there is science to backup this affirmation. It so happens that if we watch the temperatures records on the decade scale it is possible to make this affirmation, now, a few decades doesn’t mean much on the planetary scales of time, we should observe centennial or millennial tendencies to be able to make this bold affirmations, needless to say this hasn’t been observed. Many of these affirmations, with half truths on them, doesn’t sum on the understanding of the climate change phenomenon but instead they serve to confuse and distract an push anti global warming agendas and it is there where we must look for their inception.
It is true that many people take this thing of global warming so personally that they seem more fanatics of some religion and this also adds up to the confusion by not wanting to review the scientific data that is being reported. This becomes more and more important when studying an issue with the complexities of global climate, since it is a system of systems the variables are so wide that we must be very careful with the affirmations we make.

Personally I think that a critical attitude in facing the science and tendencies is very healthy to be able to develop a personal criteria, one that is balanced ecuanimus and fair.
